Crystal Strands Installation at the Magic Flute
Salzburg, Austria
The Salzburg Festival has a well-deserved reputation for high drama and vivid spectacle. This July, audiences at the very latest, surreal production of The Magic Flute directed by Hans Neuenfels were wowed by an unexpected element of the set design. An incredible lighting installation created by Swarovski hung over the stage—all 400kg of it, measuring an impressive 8mx3m. The level of care and attention required to create this tour de force took 100 hours and 200 crystal strands with more than 36,000 crystals from Swarovski, requiring 1,200m of stainless steel strands. Casting a subtle sparkling light over the starkly abstract set, it brought another element to a production that lingers in the memory.
